Homophily and Triadic Closure in Evolving Social Networks

چکیده
We present a new network model accounting for homophily and triadic closure in the evolution of social networks. In particular, in our model, each node is characterized by a number of features and the probability of a link between two nodes depends on common features. The bipartite network of the actors and features evolves according to a dynamics that depends on three parameters that respectively regulate the preferential attachment in the transmission of the features to the nodes, the number of new features per node, and the power-law behavior of the total number of observed features. We provide theoretical results and statistical estimators for the parameters of the model. We validate our approach by means of simulations and an empirical analysis of a network of scientific collaborations. keyword: social network, bipartite network, preferential attachment, homophily, triadic closure, transitivity.

Origins of Homophily in an Evolving Social Network
The authors investigate the origins of homophily in a large university community, using network data in which interactions, attributes, and affiliations are all recorded over time. The analysis indicates that highly similar pairs do show greater than average propensity to form new ties; however, it also finds that tie formation is heavily biased by triadic closure and focal closure, which effec...
متن کاملGender clustering in friendship networks: some sociological implications
This paper uses a social network approach to examine gender clustering in a complete network of teenagers and their friends. It demonstrates the advantages of using increasingly sophisticated social network techniques, including clustering coefficients and their visualization, and social selection models within the ERGM framework, to visualize and explain the process of clustering which takes p...
متن کاملTriadic analysis of affiliation networks
The widely-used notion of triadic closure has been conceptualized and measured in a variety of ways, most famously the clustering coefficient. This paper proposes a measure of triadic closure in affiliation networks designed to control for the influence of bicliques. In order to avoid arbitrariness, the paper introduces a triadic framework for affiliation networks, within which a range of possi...
متن کاملModeling the evolution of continuously-observed networks: Communication in a Facebook-like community
Building on existing stochastic actor-oriented models for panel data, we employ a conditional logistic framework to explore growth mechanisms for tie creation in continuously-observed networks. This framework models the likelihood of tie formation distinguishing it from hazard models that consider time to tie formation. It enables multiple growth mechanisms for network evolution (homophily, foc...
متن کاملUncovering the Formation of Triadic Closure in Social Networks
The triad is one of the most basic human groups in social networks. Understanding factors affecting the formation of triads will help reveal the underlying mechanisms that govern the emergence and evolution of complex social networks. In this paper, we study an interesting problem of decoding triadic closure in social networks. Specifically, for a given closed triad (a group of three people who...
